Summary - “Effective Teaching and Learning Strategies in the Language Classroom”

“Effective Teaching and Learning Strategies in the Language Classroom”

Today I came across an article “Effective Teaching and Learning Strategies in the Language Classroom” by Maya Khemlani David (Faculty of Languages & Linguistics University of Malaya. She speaks about how to make a teaching-learning process effective.  She explains three main issues in effective teaching and learning from her experience.

1.     Importance of feedback

The success of a teacher depends on effective feedback from his listeners. People are not feeling free to express their feedback due to shyness, barriers in communication, and so on. A successful teacher should be able to analyze both verbal and non-verbal signs to identify the feedback. In short, feedback and responses enable the teacher to understand what students have actually learned. Questing will help the teacher to understand whether the student understands properly or not. Teachers should not discourage queries of Students which make clarify doubts, even an insight for the teacher to improve on delivery.

2. Need of scaffolding

Once the teacher is able to identify the areas of improper feedback and misconception, the teacher can implement different modes of scaffolding. Using different modes of teaching strategies, peer learning, linking prior knowledge to new knowledge, retains and recalling knowledge, involving students in the subject are different types of scaffolding. The teacher should be able to build self-esteem, identify inner capabilities among his/her students other than just transacting the information,  The effective teacher is continually carrying on some action research in order to improve teaching and learning and how to elect response from students.

3. Need for constant improvisations

The teacher should rearrange his topic of delivery from the feedback. An effective teacher should always ensure that what is being taught is the same as what is being understood. Learning is a two-way process, it’s a give and takes process which is mutual interlinked.

A successful teacher should identify the signs of feedback from students and improve information delivery. The teacher should be capable of using different teaching strategies to improve self-esteem, elect response and identify the inner capability of the student. To become a successful teacher he/she should conduct some action research for continuous improvisation in the teaching-learning process.
